The usage scenario: Universal bag packs for coffee and tea become an attractive product with self-adhesive coffee labels and tea labels
There are countless varieties of coffee and tea, and the number is growing as hot drinks become increasingly popular. What they all have in common is that they need high-quality packaging labelling that provides information about the contents and at the same time has a strong sales impact on the consumer. Universal bags are often used as packaging, which only become high-quality overall packaging with an individually printed label.
What are the functions of coffee and tea labels?
In addition to your brand message, coffee labels and tea labels should of course provide information about the contents. In addition to the character of your coffee, this also includes information about the roast, flavour or grind. In the case of tea, it can be areas of application, flavour and strength.
Eye-catching packaging and an attention-grabbing label design make your coffee and tea stand out from the competition.
Labelling requirements for coffee and tea labels
Information on the type of coffee or tea, the net quantity in grams, the best-before date and manufacturer information (distributor) are required by law. A nutritional declaration is not required for roasted coffee (whole beans or ground). For products that contain other ingredients in addition to coffee, such as sugar and flavourings, a list of ingredients (in descending order of weight) and nutritional labelling is required. This is the case for instant coffee and cappuccino powder, for example. If allergenic ingredients or additives are used, these must be emphasised in bold print or capital letters (e.g. cereals containing gluten, dairy products, nuts).
Coffee labels and tea labels in use, on different packaging:
- Good coffee packaging is sealed airtight, opaque and can also be resealed after opening. This helps to preserve the valuable coffee flavour.
- For coffee and tea produced in manufactories and coffee roasting plants, bags are often used, e.g. flat-bottom bags, quad-seal bags and stand-up pouches (doypacks).
- Two labels are often used on the packaging to accommodate the large amount of information. The front label, also known as the main label, primarily has the task of ‘selling well’. The back label contains the various information required for labelling.
Why labels - and not pre-printed bags?
The great advantage of labels is their flexibility in stock-keeping and procurement. This allows you to react quickly to changes in purchasing behaviour. And just as quickly offer promotional products, special flavours or seasonal coffees and teas. Just think of Christmas tea blends, coffee for the football World Cup or new coffee varieties that you would like to offer for testing.
The label has clear strengths here: many different types of coffee or tea, changing quantities, small and medium runs - this means that coffee bags, tea bags and, of course, tea tins can be labelled particularly economically.
What properties must the material of the labels for coffee and tea have?
It has to be attractive and printed to a high standard! But that's not all.
The coffee labels must be resistant to moisture and grease, as well as smudge-proof and scratch-resistant for later use in the kitchen, restaurant or coffee shop. Here, labels made of film material have clear advantages over paper labels.
The adhesive plays a decisive role for coffee and tea labels!!
Coffee and tea packaging is made from a wide variety of materials: Composite film packaging, coated or lacquered bags, but sustainable materials such as kraft paper are also used.
The important thing is that the coffee and tea labels must adhere firmly and securely to the uneven, smooth or rough surfaces of the bags. This requires materials that are particularly supple and equipped with a strong adhesive.
Our adhesive material from our own production is manufactured on one of the best coating lines in the world, at the same location as the label production. Our experts in development and application technology ensure that HERMA labelling materials are perfectly suited to the respective requirements. All labels for coffee and tea are produced at the Filderstadt site near Stuttgart. This enables us to offer you a secure supply chain while maintaining the highest quality.
Quality right from the start - without compromise.
At a glance: What is important when labelling coffee packaging and tea bags?
- They must adhere securely and permanently, even on uneven surfaces and in dusty filling environments
- Depending on the packaging, paper or film is used. Film labels are particularly robust and adapt flexibly to uneven surfaces.
- An additional finish makes the labels smudge-proof, scratch-proof and moisture-resistant. The matt or glossy surface also enhances the appearance of the label.
- The label materials used fulfil the food regulations (low migration).

Which material to choose for coffee and tea labels in the configurator?
For coffee and tea packaging made of film, we recommend using a robust and flexible film label.
- PE film, white, glossy, permanently adhesive:
secure adhesion even on curved surfaces. Resistant to dirt, oil and moisture.
Paper can also be used as a labelling material in conjunction with protective coating or lamination if the surface to be labelled is flat.
- Paper, matt, highly adhesive: ideal for all surfaces, including packaging film and plastic.
It goes without saying that the labelling materials used comply with food regulations (BfR, FDA).
Additional protection for the high-quality coffee label and tea label
For additional protection of the printed image, a matt or glossy protective coating or lamination film (laminate) should be used to ensure smudge and scratch resistance. These finishes also offer reliable protection against moisture, oil and dirt.
If you want to subsequently print the best-before date on the coffee labels or tea labels using thermal transfer printing close to production or apply it with a stamp, please choose the matt protective coating.
