Here’s how to have your roll labels printed: choose the shape and format, select the material, upload your print data, complete your order and receive your delivery. You can view the price in real time at any stage.

Step 1: Choose the format

In the Label Configurator, specify the shape (rectangular with rounded corners or round) and the size. The label size can be freely defined between 20 and 313 mm to suit your product or packaging.

Step 2: Choose the material and finish

Select the label material (various papers and films), the colour scheme (black or CMYK colour) and, if required, a finish such as a protective varnish or laminating film for greater smudge and scratch resistance. Specify the winding direction and run direction, as well as the roll core diameter, to suit your labelling process. As soon as you enter the total quantity and number of print designs (variants), the configurator will display the price in real time.

Step 3: Upload print data

Add your configuration to the basket and proceed to the order summary. There, upload your print data as a PDF in CMYK. We will check your data using the free BASIC print data check; with the PREMIUM data check (subject to a charge), we will correct it where technically possible and send you a print-ready PDF.

Step 4: Complete your order

Log in to your customer account or register as a new customer. In the order summary, specify the quantity per print design/variety, change the winding direction for each variety if necessary, and submit your order. Multiple varieties in the same format can be combined into a single order.

Step 5: Check and delivery

Our pre-press specialists will check your print data. If any corrections are required, we will contact you.
Please note the requirements for print data transmission

We will then produce your custom-printed roll labels – ready for dispatch within 10 working days of receiving the correct print data. We offer free delivery within the EU.

Ordering printed roll labels online: print them yourself or have them printed?

Roll labels are self-adhesive labels supplied on a roll, ideal for use with labelling machines and manual dispensers, and of course they can also be applied by hand. They are used for product, packaging and dispatch labelling, for example as product labels for bottles, jars and tins, as well as for cosmetics and food packaging, as information labels or as dispatch labels on boxes.

For individual labels to print yourself at home or in the office, blank labels on A4 sheets and the HERMA Label Assistant are ideal. When it comes to professionally printed roll labels in small to medium commercial print runs, the Label Configurator is the right solution: you upload your print data, and HERMA takes care of the printing, a free print data check and dispatch.

  • Who or what is the Label Configurator the right solution for?

The Label Configurator is ideal for companies and tradespeople who want to order small and medium print runs flexibly and quickly. This ordering option for self-adhesive labels on rolls is also particularly advantageous for frequently changing print images, for example for promotional products or seasonal products. And last but not least, if you have many different print images/types on the same label format, you will find a particularly economical solution for your labelling requirements here. Highly automated processes ensure short delivery times and attractive prices.

  • What applications is the Label Configurator suitable for?

You can use the Label Configurator to print all types of product labels, advertising labels or even logo labels in small and medium runs for commercial use. Different types/print images on the same label format can be combined in one order, with a significant price advantage. We offer different materials, made of paper or film, with different adhesive properties. Discover what is important for different applications on our solutions pages.

  • When is digital printing better than conventional printing processes?

Compared to conventional printing technologies such as flexographic printing, the digital printing process offers economic advantages for short and medium runs, even with a large variety of types. There are no longer set-up times and printing plates with the digital printing process, as is the case with conventional printing processes. Flexographic printing is more economical for large print runs. For large quantities (>500,000 labels), we will be happy to provide you with a customised quote: to the enquiry form

Digital printing differs from direct thermal and thermal transfer printing in terms of the print image: with digital printing, you receive high-quality, colour and pre-designed labels directly from us. Direct thermal and thermal transfer methods, on the other hand, are primarily suitable for variable data that you apply yourself using your own label printer, such as barcodes, batch numbers or best-before dates; the print is black. Both methods can be combined: for subsequent thermal printing, select thermal paper as the material and ‘matt protective varnish, thermal transfer printable’ or ‘glossy protective varnish’ as the finish. For subsequent thermal transfer printing, select the desired paper material from the range, plus the finish ‘protective varnish, matt, thermal transfer printable’ or ‘matt laminating film’. This allows you to subsequently add further text to your colour-printed roll labels yourself using thermal transfer printing.

  • Which and how many colours can be printed?

We print your labels digitally using the CMYK colour system (4 colours). For transparent label material, you can also select opaque white so that the colours on the transparent label are opaque and the background does not show through. Detailed information on print data creation

  • Which label material should I select in the Label Configurator?

This depends on the area of application of the labels: where they will be applied, temperature range, resistance to moisture, suitability for food contact, ... Read more about the label materials in the configurator.

  • What does "finishing" mean in the Label Configurator?

The finishing of printed labels on rolls - with protective varnish or laminating film - ensures that the printed image is particularly smudge-proof and scratch-resistant. Glossy protective varnish or lamination also gives the labels a visual finish. More information on finishing

  • Can I also order special shapes in the Label Configurator?

You can select rectangular label shapes (with rounded corners) or round shapes in the Label Configurator. We are happy to produce all other shapes, e.g. oval or free-form, for you as customised products using the conventional order process. Please use the enquiry form and let us know your requirements.

  • Do I need an account and how can I register?

You can configure your labels without an account and add them to your shopping basket, or download a quote first. When you proceed to the order overview, you will be asked to log in (if you already have an account) or to register (create an account).

  • Can I order as a private individual?

The Label Configurator for printed roll labels is only aimed at tradespeople (with a VAT ID number) or corporate bodies. Unfortunately, private individuals cannot order printed roll labels using the Label Configurator.

Discover the HERMA Label Assistant online and the matching standard labels on A4 sheets for printing adhesive labels at home.

  • How long is the offer I have downloaded valid for?

The offer PDF shows you your configuration with the price determined in the Label Configurator at the time of download. In the PDF you will find a link that will take you back to the online configurator, which is already pre-filled with all configuration details. As production conditions may have changed between downloading the quotation and the time of ordering, a new price is calculated in the configurator. The price that is displayed in the Label Configurator when the order is placed always applies.

  • What payment options are available?

    Payment per invoice:
For payments by invoice, the net purchase price is due for settlement without deductions 30 days after receipt of our invoice, unless otherwise agreed.

    Payment per credit card:
When selecting the credit card option, the input screen for credit card data appears after clicking on the button “Order with obligation to pay”. Your data will be transmitted using an SSL-encrypted connection. The amount will be charged to your credit card at the very earliest when the goods are despatched.

    Prepayment:
If our information on the creditworthiness of a customer is insufficient, we reserve the right to make delivery only after receipt of payment (payment due in advance). The HERMA bank account details required for a credit transfer will be sent to you by e-mail with our proforma invoice. Payment is due immediately after conclusion of the contract unless a later date is agreed by the parties. After we have received the invoiced amount, we will send you an order confirmation email and start production.

Our General terms of Business for online shops apply to all orders and deliveries.

  • What are the shipping costs?

We ship free of charge within the EU.

For deliveries outside the EU, the following flat-rate shipping costs apply.

  • What do I need to consider with the print data?

Print data creation: You can create your customised labels using graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, ArtPro, Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher or CorelDRAW. We require your print files as a PDF in CMYK.

Key requirements: high-resolution PDF at actual size (1:1), colour composition in CMYK, image resolution of at least 300 dpi, 2 mm bleed all round, 2 mm safety margin from the die-cut outline, fonts converted to paths. For transparent film labels, please also take the white background into account.

If any corrections need to be made to the print data, we will contact you immediately.

  • What is the delivery time with the configurator?

Your customised printed roll labels will be ready for dispatch within 10 working days once the correct print data is available.

Information on label material for digitally printed labels on a roll

Which label material is right for your application? Here’s a quick guide – you’ll find the detailed material specifications directly below:

  • Paper: for dry indoor applications, e.g. product labels on cardboard boxes, glass and packaging bags. A finish can be selected for additional abrasion protection.
  • PE and PP film (white or transparent): for damp environments, outdoor applications and curved or flexible packaging, such as for personal care and cosmetic products. Transparent film creates a ‘no-label look’.
  • PE PaperPrint: combines the high-quality print appearance of paper with the durability of film – ideal for robust labels with intricate designs, on rough, damp or cool surfaces; seawater-resistant to BS5609
  • Thermal paper: when colour-printed labels are additionally printed with variable data using thermal printing, e.g. dispatch labels with a coloured logo.

What level of adhesion do you require?

Depending on the material, different adhesion properties are available in the configurator:

  • Permanent adhesion: the standard for permanent product and packaging labelling.
  • Strong adhesion: very high initial adhesion; adheres even to plastic and packaging films, as well as in cold and damp environments.
  • Extremely strong adhesion (PE PaperPrint): for rough, cold or damp surfaces such as cardboard boxes, barrels or ampoules.
  • Removable: can be removed without leaving any residue, e.g. for temporary labelling.

Your customised digitally printed roll labels are made from high-quality label papers and films that are produced in our own adhesive material production facility.

Information on finishing for your digitally printed roll labels

The finishing of the printed labels on the roll - with protective varnish or laminating film - ensures that the printed image is particularly smudge-proof and scratch-resistant.

The Label Configurator offers a choice of four finishes:

  • Protective varnish glossy: a glossy protective varnish that increases the print’s scratch and smudge resistance. Cannot be printed on subsequently using thermal transfer printing.
  • Protective varnish matt, thermal transfer printable: a matt protective varnish that increases the print’s scratch and smudge resistance. Can be printed on subsequently using thermal transfer printing.
  • Laminating film matt: transparent, matt polypropylene film (13 μm). Provides additional protection against moisture and abrasion. Can be printed on subsequently using thermal transfer printing.
  • Laminating film glossy: clear, glossy polypropylene film (20 μm). Provides additional protection against moisture and abrasion. Cannot be printed on subsequently using thermal transfer printing.

Subsequent printing of information on the label roll: When using ‘Protective varnish matt, thermal transfer printable’ or ‘Laminating film matt’, the printed labels on roll can be subsequently printed using thermal transfer printing, e.g. with BBD, lot number and other production-relevant information.

If you have any questions about whether additional finishing is advisable for your digitally printed labels and which finishing is the right one for your application, please contact us - we will be happy to advise you. Contact us

Discover more about the production process for your customised roll labels in digital printing

At HERMA, we use HP Indigo printing systems (inkjet printing) for digital printing of roll labels.
This digital printing system impresses with its outstanding print results and consistently high print quality. For both paper labels in digital printing and film labels in digital printing.

At HERMA, digitally printed labels on a roll are produced in several batches side by side - this enables us to produce your printed labels on a roll particularly economically and offer you attractive prices.

  • Winding direction and feed direction: The winding direction determines whether the labels are wound on the inside or outside of the roll (inward or outward winding) and in which orientation they are dispensed from the carrier tape, for example, header-first or tail-first. This is crucial for the correct labelling of your product or packaging. Select the winding direction to suit your labelling process. An incorrect winding direction can lead to dispensing errors and production waste. If you are labelling manually, use the default setting ‘Outside winding, right-leading’ in the configurator.
  • Roll core (core diameter): In the Label Configurator, you can choose between four core diameters: 25, 40, 50 and 76.2 mm. 76.2 mm (3 inches) is the default setting and is standard in the industry for automatic labelling machines; the smaller diameters of 25, 40 and 50 mm are more suitable for manual dispensers and smaller systems. Please also specify the maximum outer roll diameter that your labelling system can handle to ensure that everything runs smoothly during dispensing.

If you need label materials or print runs that are not available in the Label Configurator, simply get in touch with us.

Have labels on rolls printed: We also produce special shapes, additional perforations and personalised digitally printed labels, e.g. with consecutive barcodes, on the high-performance digital printing machines in our label production facility.
