The usage scenario: Spice packaging, such as bags, tins and jars, can be customised with self-adhesive spice labels for individual product packaging
There are many spices - pepper, barbecue spices, baking ingredients, spices for sauces and soups, various herbs or even salt and pepper are just a few examples. And the packaging used for spices is just as varied. What they all have in common is that a high-quality spice label is what turns a neutral, standardised package into a high-quality product.
Spice labels for different types of packaging - what tasks do they have to fulfil?
They convey the brand message, which should encourage people to buy. A high-quality spice label with an appealing design that perfectly matches the spice packaging creates a harmonious overall product.
Labelling requirements for spice labels
Spice labels provide information about the product: in accordance with food regulations, this includes the exact product name, the filling quantity, the best-before date, information about the manufacturer and possibly a reference to allergenic substances. Nutritional labelling is not mandatory for spices.
Labels for spices therefore need a fairly large area to carry all the text content. Or the packaging is labelled with two labels: a front label for the brand message and a back label for the prescribed detailed information.
Spice labels are used on many different types of packaging:
- Metal cans (usually aluminium) with lids
- Glass jars, plastic jars and ceramic containers, with lids or screw caps
- Plastic shakers, transparent or opaque
- Folded paper bags, with or without a window
- Spice bags/flavour bags made of composite film (e.g. PET with PE or PP inner coating)
- Doypacks (stand-up pouches)
- Spice tubes (test tubes with cork lids)
Which material is right for your spice labels?
Depending on the surface/material and shape of the spice packaging, different label properties are required (label material and adhesive strength).
The subsequent place of use also plays an important role: for long-term use in the kitchen or restaurant, the spice labels must be resistant to dirt, oil and moisture. Spice labels made of film materials are particularly suitable for this purpose.
Refill packs, usually bags made of paper or film, are generally filled into spice containers that are used for longer periods of time, and paper labels can be used here.
It all depends on the adhesive!
The following is important for all spice packaging: the labels for spices must adhere firmly and permanently to the spice packaging so that the contents are clearly labelled even when used for long periods of time.
When filling spices in automatic packaging systems, it is particularly important that the adhesive of the spice labels adheres immediately and strongly to the surface of the spice packaging, even in dusty filling environments, so that the automatic filling process runs smoothly.
At HERMA, we use adhesive material from our own production, which is manufactured on one of the best coating systems in the world, in close proximity to the label production. Our development and application technology specialists ensure that the adhesive properties are ideally suited to the surfaces and requirements. This creates quality right from the start.
At a glance: What is important for spice labels?
- Self-adhesive spice labels must adhere permanently and securely to the various spice packaging.
- They contain important information and must also function in ‘continuous use’ on the spice packaging or spice container.
- Depending on the spice packaging, spice labels made of paper or film are used.
- Additional finishing (protective coating or lamination) makes the labels for spice products resistant to dirt, oil and moisture.

The following materials are particularly suitable for spice labels:
- For bags made of paper or film:
Paper, matt, permanent adhesive: ideal for bags and packaging made of paper or cardboard.
Paper, matt, strongly adhesive: ideal for all surfaces, including packaging film and plastic. - For plastic or ceramic tins and jars:
PE film, white, glossy, permanent adhesion: securely adheres even to curved surfaces. Resistant to dirt, oil and moisture.
PE film, transparent, glossy, permanent adhesive: transparent spice labels offer a no-label look, e.g. on glass jars. Adheres securely to curved surfaces. Resistant to dirt, oil and moisture. (Please note the information on colour structure: Use of opaque white in the digital print data.)
These label materials have been tested on a wide variety of surfaces - and offer the best adhesive properties.
All label materials used comply with the recommendations of BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105 for dry and fatty foods.
This makes labels for spices smudge-proof and scratch-resistant - for long-lasting spice labelling:
For all spice labels, we recommend applying a protective coating or laminating film to make the spice labels smudge-proof and scratch-resistant. These finishes also offer reliable protection against moisture, oil and dirt.
And with their matt or glossy appearance, they add that special something to your spice packaging.
If you would like to subsequently print the best-before date on the spice labels using thermal transfer printing close to production, please choose the matt protective coating.

Do you need spice labels as a customised solution in terms of shape and function?
You can order rectangular spice labels with rounded corners and round spice labels in the configurator. If you require special shapes/other label shapes, or if your spice label is also to be used as a labelling and closure label, we will be happy to advise you and provide you with a customised quote.
For example, we have developed a special closure solution for salt shakers in which the head label not only presents the brand, but also ensures an original closure. The non-adhesive grip tab makes it easier for the consumer to open.

Customised printing, online configuration and ordering. Spice labels with the Label Configurator
Whether you are a large producer of spices or manufacture your spices for your farm shop or online shop: HERMA offers the right solution for your spice labels!
The spice labels are printed in short and medium runs using digital printing: this enables cost-effective production of short and medium runs, even with a wide variety of different print images. We print large runs particularly economically using UV flexographic printing.
And last but not least: Spice labels on ‘universal’ spice packaging offer decisive advantages compared to fully printed spice packaging. The neutral ‘standardised’ packaging (bags, tins, jars) can be procured in large quantities economically and on a long-term basis.
The spice labels are then procured in small and medium runs to suit your production schedule - with a high degree of flexibility, even if the print image changes. What's more, the wide variety of spice labels on a roll take up much less space in the warehouse and can produce a large number of complete ‘printed’ packs.
We will be happy to advise you - and create a customised offer for you!
