Self-adhesive honey labels, just as high-quality as your honey, are the ideal solution to turn the honey jar with its valuable contents into a personalised, attractive product. Labelling the honey jar with a high-quality label is a decisive factor in the good sales of your product.
What is important for honey labels?
In addition to the attractive, sales-promoting design of the honey label - in a modern or traditional label design - the honey labels must also contain the mandatory information stipulated in the Honey Ordinance. This includes, among other things:
- Product name: ‘Honey’ would be sufficient, but it is advisable to include the variety name such as blossom honey, forest honey or other variety names on the label, as this could be an important guide for the consumer when making a purchase decision. A nutrition declaration and a list of ingredients are not required.
- Origin / country of origin: for example ‘Honey from Germany’ or ‘Mixture of honey from EU countries’. New since 2024 is that the countries must be named with percentages for mixtures. A region or city can also be named.
- Producer / distributor: Name and postal address are used to contact the consumer. Email address and website are not sufficient.
- Filling quantity: the honey jar label must clearly state how much honey is in the jar (net weight). Minimum font sizes must be observed, depending on the size of the honey jar, e.g. 4 mm font height for a 500g jar.
- Best before date (BBD): the label must contain the information ‘best before ...’. It is up to you whether you stamp the best-before date or print it on the label afterwards using thermal transfer printing.
- Lot labelling / batch number: Lot labelling is used for traceability back to the time of manufacture.
- Storage instructions: We recommend ‘Store in a dry place protected from heat’
Important information! It is all the more important that the honey labels adhere securely to the jar and that the print is permanently legible.
What should not be on the honey label?
Advertising with self-evident statements such as ‘honeycomb-free’, ‘cold-spun’, ‘natural’ is not permitted, nor is false or misleading information such as ‘with valuable vitamins’ or statements about medicinal effects.
By the way: an original seal / guarantee seal, e.g. with a sealing flap, is not mandatory.

Honey labels made of film are supple and have a particularly high-quality appearance. Their matt or glossy appearance gives the honey jar a special look. What's more, honey jar labels made of film can be wiped clean without leaving stains on the labels.

Honey jar labels must fit snugly to the round or square shape of the jars and adhere securely. The honey labels must also be resistant to ageing and moisture.
The adhesive must adhere securely to the honey jar both when applied by hand and during machine labelling.

In the configurator, you can define and order rectangular honey labels with rounded corners and round honey labels, which are ideal as lid labels, in your desired size. You can also choose from the most frequently requested label materials.
A tamper-evident closure, e.g. with a sealing flap that connects the labelling label to the lid, is not prescribed for honey. The production of such continuous ‘sealing labels’ requires a lot of material due to the large surface area and generates a lot of ‘labelling material waste’ during production - and it is also about twice as expensive as a rectangular or round label for the body of your honey jar.
Of course, you can also define and order labels for other products such as mustard, pesto, dips and sauces using the configurator.
We recommend the following materials for honey labels in the digital printing configurator:
- PE film, white, glossy, permanently adhesive:
The glossy film surface gives your honey in a jar a particularly elegant look. Honey labels made from this film are supple and adhere securely, ideal for jars of all sizes. They are moisture-resistant and insensitive to dirt. - PE film, transparent, glossy, permanently adhesive:
Transparent honey jar labels create a special effect on transparent honey jars, they are almost invisible, the imprint looks as if it has been printed directly onto the jar. (For transparent honey labels, please note the information on the use of opaque white in the digital print data). - Paper, matt, strongly adhesive:
Honey labels made of paper are more cost-effective than honey labels made of film, but should definitely be made more resistant with protective varnish or laminating film. The adhesive sticks securely in damp and chilled areas.
Food regulations: All labelling materials used comply with the recommendations of BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105.
This makes the honey labels durable, smudge-proof and scratch-resistant:
For honey jar labels made of film and especially paper, it is important that the printed image is finished with protective varnish or laminating film. These finishes ensure that the print on the honey label is smudge-proof and scratch-resistant and provide additional protection against moisture and dirt.
Protective varnish and laminating film are available in matt or glossy - choose what suits your product and the desired appearance of the label best.
If you want to print information on the honey labels with a thermal transfer printer during filling - for example a best-before date - please choose the matt protective varnish or the matt lamination film. This also applies if you want to stamp the best-before date on the honey labels.
