The usage scenario: Neutral bags containing nuts, dried fruit, lentils, rice, etc. are labelled to create individual, high-quality product packaging

The wide variety of high-quality nuts, dried fruit and other dry foods such as legumes, rice and much more are often packaged in transparent or opaque foil bags. Only with a label does it become clear what exactly is contained in the packaging. These labels are eye-catching for consumers and are intended to encourage them to buy. However, they also carry important information to comply with food labelling requirements.

Labels for identifying nuts, legumes and dried fruit – what requirements must they meet?

Firstly, they convey a message designed to encourage consumers to buy the product. A high-quality label with an appealing design that perfectly matches the packaging creates a harmonious overall product. They also fulfil the labelling requirements stipulated by law in the Food Regulation.

Labelling requirements for dry foods

In order to provide consumers with comprehensive information, a wide range of details must be displayed on the packaging of nuts, dried fruit and other dry foods. For this reason, labels for nuts and dried fruit need to be large enough to convey all the required information in accordance with regulations. Often, especially with smaller packaging, two labels are required: one label on the front for the brand message, product name and quantity, and one label on the back for the various detailed information required by food labelling regulations

Detailed labelling requirements for nuts, dried fruit and legumes:

Detailed labelling requirements for nuts, dried fruit and legumes:

  • Product name: It is important to use a clear and unambiguous name, such as ‘almonds’, “hazelnuts” or ‘pine nuts’. Simply stating ‘nuts’ would not be sufficient.
  • List of ingredients: as with many other foods, a list of ingredients is also required for mixtures of nuts or dried fruit. All ingredients must be listed in descending order of weight. The exact percentage of the different nuts or dried fruits in the mixture does not have to be stated (but can be added voluntarily).
  • Special highlighting of allergens: Ingredients that may cause allergies or intolerances must be clearly marked in the list of ingredients (e.g. in capital letters or bold print) and labelled with an allergen warning. These include many types of nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts/Queensland nuts) as well as peanuts.
  • Additives: such as sulphur dioxide in dried fruit, must be declared if they exceed certain limits (more than 10 mg/kg for sulphur dioxide and sulphites).
  • Nutritional information table: Most food packaging, including nuts and dried fruit, must state the energy content in kcal and kJ and the amount per 100 grams of the following nutrients: fat, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugar, protein, salt.
  • Country of origin labelling: Packaged and loose nuts and dried fruit without shells must be labelled with their country of origin; this also applies to sliced or chopped nuts. The labelling requirement for the country of origin of nuts and nut mixtures is regulated by EU Regulation (EU) 2023/2429, which has been in force since 1 January 2025. It also applies to dried fruit, such as apples, apricots, pears and many more. In the case of mixtures, the country of origin must be clearly indicated for each ingredient.
  • Manufacturer/distributor: Name and postal address are provided so that consumers can contact the company. An email address and website are not sufficient.
  • Net quantity: how much is actually in the product? The net quantity provides this information. It must be clearly visible on the packaging so that consumers can compare the prices of different products, taking into account the net quantity.
  • Best before date (BBD): the label must contain the information ‘best before ...’. The date format is determined by the shelf life. For nuts and dried fruit, the shelf life is usually 3 to 18 months, for which the date format ‘month and year’ is prescribed. As a rule, the best before date is only printed close to production, during filling/packaging. Our digitally printed nut labels, in combination with the matt protective coating or matt laminating film finish, are ideal for reprinting with thermal transfer printers.
  • Lot identification / batch number: The lot number, a freely selectable combination of numbers and/or letters, is determined by the manufacturer and enables traceability back to the production batch.
  • Storage information: For dried fruit, storage information (e.g. ‘Store in a dry place away from light’) may be required.

Which material is right for your labelling for dry foods?

Depending on the surface/material and shape of the packaging, different label properties may be required (label material and adhesive strength).

Nuts and dried fruit are packaged in different types of packaging:

  • Folded paper bags, with or without a window
  • Doypacks (stand-up pouches): flexible packaging made of paper or film that stands upright thanks to a special base.
  • Ready-made bags made of plastic film, usually PE or PP, which are sealed with clips or labels. These can be transparent or opaque.
  • Tubular bags made of transparent film, which are sealed during packaging and shaped and sized.
  • Cardboard or plastic trays sealed in film

Labels are suitable for all types of packaging.

Paper or film labels can be used. The often uneven surfaces require flexible label materials that adhere particularly well. Especially in the case of film packaging, it makes sense to use film labels made of the same material so that the packaging can be recycled separately.

It all comes down to the adhesive!

The important thing with all packaging for nuts and dried fruit is that the labels must adhere securely to the packaging so that the legally required labelling remains intact until it reaches the consumer. And, of course, labels that remain attractive over time are also an important signal to consumers that this is a high-quality product.

Filling packaging with nuts and dried fruit can be a dusty business, so it is important that the labels adhere immediately and strongly to the packaging, especially in automatic filling processes.

Highest quality right from the start. Short distances to the label.
We use adhesive material from our own production for the production of digitally printed roll labels. It is manufactured on one of the best coating lines in the world, located in close proximity to the label production facility. Our experts in development and application technology ensure that the adhesive properties are ideally suited to the application.

What is important when it comes to labels for nuts and dried fruit?

  • Different packaging materials, many different varieties, different packaging sizes – labels are the flexible solution for all requirements.
  • Adhesive labels for nuts and dried fruit must adhere securely to different packaging materials so that important information, e.g. from the legal labelling requirements, remains permanently on the product, from packaging to sale to the consumer.
  • Paper or film labels can be used. With additional finishing (protective coating or lamination), the labels become resistant to dirt, oil and moisture, and the scratch resistance of the print image is increased.
  • Many varieties/print images can also be produced particularly economically and flexibly in small and medium runs using digital printing.

These materials in the Configurator are particularly suitable:

  • Paper, matt, permanent adhesive: ideal for paper or cardboard bags and packaging.
  • Paper, matt, strong adhesive: ideal for all surfaces, including packaging film and plastic.
  • PE film, white, glossy, permanent adhesive: adheres securely even to uneven surfaces. Resistant to dirt, oil and moisture.

These label materials have been tested on a wide variety of surfaces and offer the best adhesive properties. They comply with BfR XIV or FDA 21 CFR 175.105 recommendations for dry and fatty foods.

For this application, we recommend a protective coating or laminating film to make the labels smudge-proof and scratch-resistant. These finishes also offer reliable protection against moisture and dirt. And their matt or glossy appearance adds that special something to your packaging.

If you want to print the best-before date on the labels afterwards using thermal transfer printing during packaging, please choose the matt protective varnish or matt laminating film.
