What are the advantages of the digital printing for label production?
Digital printing refers to a variety of digital printing processes (direct printing, non-impact printing). The print image is transferred directly from a print file or data sources from a computer to the printing press without the need for printing plates or printing moulds.
Digital printing process - ideal for a wide range of colours and varieties, even for short runs
Compared to traditional processes such as offset, gravure, and flexographic printing, digital label printing offers economic advantages for short runs even with various kinds and colours and great flexibility for changing print images, e.g. serial printing or personalisation. In digital label printing, there is no need for the relatively long setup times found in conventional printing processes. However, there may be some limitations when printing unique colours like gold, silver and neon.
At HERMA, we rely on the HP Indigo printing process (inkjet printing process). It is characterised by high consistency in print quality and outstanding print results in photo quality.
This digital printing system offers particular advantages for the production of consecutively numbered barcode labels on rolls, for example, even for large print runs.

Digitally printed labels on a roll in top quality, customised precisely to your application
With the adhesive material from our own production, we are able to customise the adhesive properties precisely to your application, naturally in the label format you require. High-quality paper and films are used to print the digital labels, for sharply contoured print products.
Depending on the application, the following label materials are used in digital printing, for example:
- Paper with a matt surface and paper with a satined surface: particularly suitable for printing barcodes
- Paper with a slightly glossy, coated surface: especially well-suited for halftone printing in black and colour
- Polypropylene film and polyethylene film, white matt opaque and white glossy: ideal for robust labels in the field of product identification, chemicals, building materials, ... Suitable for re-marking, using thermal transfer printers
- Polyester film, white matt: particularly robust and tear-resistant labels, ideal for outdoor applications. Also suitable for higher temperatures and for humid environment.
The label materials of the digital labels can be combined with different adhesives (extremely strong adhesive, permanent adhesive, removable). For your digital label, you can choose the adhesive strengths and service temperatures of the adhesives to match your application.
Usage scenarios for digital labels on rolls
Created using the digital printing process: Continuous or fixed barcodes
We print all barcode types, such as UPC, EAN-128, EAN-13, 2of5 Interleaved, Code 39, QR-Code, Datamatrix Code, NVE Code, PZN Code and other pharmaceutical codes, all with the best possible contrast and reliable barcode legibility. Digital labels, that are ideal for use in logistics and archiving.
We manage the number ranges per customer in a database to ensure that each barcode is unique. We can import customer-specific number ranges via CSV and XLS files. Find out more about barcode labels.
Ideal for coloured identification labels with a high variety of types
Digital label printing also offers the best conditions and possibilities in the field of product design. In this way, coloured identification labels are produced, e.g. for labelling meat products’ country of origin or for product information on food packaging of all kinds, e.g. tubular bag packaging.
The colour-printed digital labels on rolls can be customised with quantity, date of manufacture and sell-by date when packaging is being carried out – and all of the above label materials, including the film labels, are suitable for re-marking using, for example, thermal transfer printers.
