Hazardous labels for dangerous goods - reliable and legally compliant

Hazardous goods labels and hazardous material labels for the chemical and other industries: safe and seawater-resistant

When safety is a must – hazardous labels for dangerous goods from HERMA

Labelling of products in the chemical industry is regulated by strict laws. The GHS classification and the CLP Regulation set forth uniform international rules for labelling chemicals, including information on components, potential hazards and classification. These chemicals are identified by pictograms. The substances are divided into classes and subclasses. Hazardous substances can be flammable, radioactive, corrosive, toxic, oxidising, self-reactive, infectious or environmentally hazardous. Examples are petrol, acids, propane, solvents, volatile gases, and poisons such as arsenic. Lithium batteries also fall in this category.

Dangerous goods and hazardous substances – what is the difference?

The terms “hazardous substances” and “dangerous goods” are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Hazardous substances (hazardous materials) are all substances, objects and goods that pose a hazard when used or stored (hazard to health or the environment), but this does not include transport.

If objects or substances pose an additional risk during transport, they are called dangerous goods and must be labelled as such. Goods of this kind can be the source of further hazards in an accident during transport by road or sea. For example, they might be highly flammable or under pressure (such as gases). This must be clearly indicated on the transported goods by means of hazardous goods labels with pictograms and numerical codes.

Versatile labels for hazardous substances and dangerous goods

Labels for hazardous substances and dangerous goods must stick firmly to containers of all kinds: barrels, drums, canisters, shipping containers, IBCs, FIBCs, bottles and pallets. The surfaces, which can be metal, plastic, glass or wood, have many different requirements. Depending on the application, they can include resistance to chemicals (acids, alkalis, solvents), saltwater, dirt, grease and oil. Environmental factors such as heat, moisture, cold and UV radiation must also be taken into account. HERMA hazardous goods labels easily comply with additional requirements like resistance to filling with hot liquids.

Robust yet flexible films of different types, adhesives with a wide temperature range and application on different surfaces, light-resistant printing inks (Blue Wool Scale 6-7), plus perforation punching and printing as required: We will work with you to develop the labels you need for identifying your dangerous goods – from the selection of materials all the way to printing.

One of HERMA’s core strengths is the production of special labels in large quantities. This enables us to fulfil the particular requirements of your application. Take advantage of our expertise when it comes to large production runs of custom labels for hazardous substances and dangerous goods.

  • Labelling of dangerous goods: Saltwater-resistant as per BS 5609

Many dangerous goods require certification according to British Standard 5609. To comply with this standard, hazardous labels must be able to withstand three months of immersion in seawater without separating from the substrate. Sea and air transport of packages and bundles containing dangerous goods or hazardous substances is permitted only if their hazardous goods labels are certified to be saltwater-resistant. Drawing from our wide range of adhesives, we can manufacture hazard shipping labels that comply with the section of BS 5609 that applies to you, including Section 3.

An example is our material for single-sheet applications, made of white, matt PE film:

    • Weather-resistant, dirt-repellent and oil resistant labels
    • Temperature-resistant from -40° C to +150° C
    • Very flexible, also fits well on curved surfaces
    • Outstanding adhesion, even on critical surfaces
    • Printable chemical resistant labels with excellent results on black-and-white and colour laser printers

Ordering of labels for hazardous substances: You can order labels made of white PE film (blank) in standard formats directly from our online-Shop.

  • Legal basis

The Dangerous Goods Ordinance (GGVSEB, GGVSee, ...) lists all dangerous goods. It is supplemented by international regulations such as the ADR (road transport), ADN (inland waterways), IMDG (sea transport) or RID (rail).

The IMDG Code (International Maritime Code for Dangerous Goods) is the regulation for the carriage of dangerous goods in maritime transport, drawn up by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations.

Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) / IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations is a set of regulations for the transport of dangerous goods in air traffic by IATA (International Air Transport Association).

Labelling of dangerous goods as per ADR:
9 dangerous goods classes that are valid worldwide:

    • Class 1: Explosive substances
    • Class 2: Gases and gaseous substances
    • Class 3: Liquid substances
    • Class 4: Solid substances and objects
    • Class 5: Flammable substances
    • Class 6: Toxic substances
    • Class 7: Radioactive substances
    • Class 8: Corrosive substances
    • Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances
  • Hazardous material labels: Custom pre-printed with red diamond frames and overprintable

Film labels from HERMA, manufactured using our own adhesives, are the perfect basis for your chemical labels and labels for hazardous substances. Preprinted labels with GHS diamond frames in your label format are ideal for custom overprinting with your printer.

    • On a roll for thermal transfer printers
We manufacture hazardous material labels for thermal transfer printing. Made of various adhesive materials and supplied on a roll, they can either be applied manually or dispensed via labellers. High labelling speeds are possible. Our special die-cutting technique prevents soiling of the thermal transfer printer and labeller despite a high adhesive application on the hazardous material label (which is especially important for secure adhesion).

    • On a roll for inkjet printers with pigmented inks
Inkjet printers for labels on rolls can print various pictograms for hazards and dangerous goods in colour and with different texts. HERMA’s saltwater-resistant inkjet labels ensure brilliant colours and high print quality. The print image is smudge-proof and waterproof thanks to the special coating on the film labels’ surface. The adhesive is temperature-resistant and adheres securely even on critical surfaces. The hazardous material labels also repel oil and dirt.

    • On A4 or A3 sheets as well as in special formats, for black-and-white and colour laser printers
BS 5609-certified film labels from HERMA are the ideal solution for printing short runs with laser printers and colour laser printers. The special laser material has excellent toner fixation and processing reliability. All film materials used for printable chemical resistant labels for hazardous substances meet the stringent requirements of the British Standard.

  • Ready-printed hazardous goods labels

Of course we also produce labels for dangerous goods in the prescribed diamond format with conspicuous colours. All the hazard classes in Germany’s Hazardous Substances Ordinance are represented.

These highly visible diamond-shaped hazardous shipping labels with pictogram and hazard class are mandatory for the transport of dangerous goods by road, rail, sea or air. Such labelling is required for extremely flammable, toxic, corrosive, radioactive and carcinogenic substances, to give only a few examples. Here too, what counts is to select the right combination of film material and adhesive:

    • Secure adhesion to metal containers and barrels made of plastic or steel
    • Special adhesives with high tack and excellent final adhesion
    • Resistant to liquids, grease, oil, alkalis, solvents and acids
    • Film materials made of PE, PP and PET: dirt-repellent, resistant to cold and heat, and saltwater-resistant
    • Labels for dangerous goods are suitable for flat or curved surfaces, depending on the type of film. They also adhere securely and permanently to shrink and stretch films.
