Frequently asked questions about hazard labels and placards:

  • What are the types of hazard labels?

Hazard labels are labels that are attached to the packaging and transport units of hazardous goods and clearly identify the type of hazard (internationally standardised).

Hazard labels have a standardised shape (diamond) and defined layouts (symbols, text and colour), which must comply with the ADR, RID, IATA and IMDG guidelines (specifications for different transport routes).

In order to differentiate between the variety of different hazardous substances during transport as dangerous goods, they have been grouped into dangerous goods classes that have similar hazards.

The layouts of the hazard labels differ in colour and print (pictograms and text). There are 9 dangerous goods classes (main classes) that are valid worldwide and describe a specific type of hazard. For some classes there are additional subclasses for a more detailed description of the hazard, with different layouts and (in some cases) different colour codes.

    • Class 1: Explosive substances (subclasses 1.1 to 1.6)
    • Class 2: Gases and gaseous substances (subclasses 2.1 to 2.3)
    • Class 3: Liquid substances
    • Class 4: Solid substances and objects (subclasses 4.1 to 4.3)
    • Class 5: Flammable substances (subclasses 5.1 and 5.2)
    • Class 6: Toxic substances (subclasses 6.1 and 6.2)
    • Class 7: Radioactive substances (subclasses 7A to 7E)
    • Class 8: Corrosive substances
    • Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous substances (subclass 9A for batteries)
    • There are also hazard labels for environmentally hazardous substances (e.g. oils)
  • What is the difference between hazmat labels and placards?

Hazard labels are smaller labels (usually in 100x100 mm format) that are attached to packages of dangerous goods (packaging, crates, drums). They describe the specific hazard posed by the contents of the transport container and enable the hazard of the individual package to be clearly identified.

Placards are warning notices on larger labels (250x250 mm) that are affixed to the outside of means of transport (e.g. lorries, containers). They are used when transporting large quantities of dangerous goods and indicate the type of danger of the entire transport. The larger format increases visibility so that the emergency services can quickly recognise the hazard in the event of an accident.

In the range on this website you will find both label sizes, with the legally valid layouts. Can be ordered online in the shop of our co-operation partner BOXLAB Services, even in small quantities. Short delivery time, as express delivery even within 24 hours.

  • What do the colors of hazard labels and hazmat placards mean?

The colour codes on hazard labels and hazmat placards indicate the different hazards posed by a hazardous material. Each colour has a specific meaning.

All colours are particularly conspicuous (signal colours). They are used as a full-surface background colour or on parts of the diamond-shaped labels. There are also hazard labels with several colours (e.g. partial areas or stripes) if the hazard class has different hazards.

The most important colours and their meaning:

    • Orange: explosive substances (class 1)
    • Red: flammable (classes 2.1, 3, 4.1, 4.2 and 5.2, depending on whether gas, liquid or solid substance)
    • Yellow: oxidising substances (class 5). Also used as a partial area for radioactive substances (class 7)
    • Green: Gases that are compressed or liquefied but not flammable (class 2.2)
    • Blue: Substances that react with water (class 4)
    • White: Toxic substances (class 6) and environmentally hazardous substances
    • Black: Corrosive substances (class 8)
  • How must placards be displayed?

Internationally applicable regulations, such as the ‘European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR)’, govern the affixing of placards.

Placards must be clearly visible on all four sides of the means of transport (lorry, container) so that they can be quickly recognised by emergency services in all situations. Placards have a standard size of 25 x 25 cm.

It is important that the placards adhere permanently to the means of transport even under difficult environmental conditions, e.g. heat, moisture, cold and UV radiation. Robust film labels from HERMA, with an extremely strong adhesive that has a wide temperature range, are the right solution here. They are also resistant to chemicals, dirt, grease and oil, and fulfil the requirements of British Standard BS5609 (seawater resistant) for transport by sea.

  • Can I print my own hazmat labels?

We strongly advise against self-printing as there are a variety of legal requirements with strict rules on sizes, spacing, colours, materials and even line widths. Failure to comply with the regulations can lead to fines and penalties. Templates from the Internet may be out of date, as the legal requirements have already changed several times over the course of time.

To be on the safe side when labelling dangerous goods:

The ready-to-use hazard labels and placards that we offer online in cooperation with our partner BOXLAB Services fulfil all the requirements that must be met when labelling dangerous goods and can be delivered to you within 24 hours as an express delivery, in the desired quantity, starting from a quantity of one.

    • Layout: always complies with current laws and regulations and can be used for all transport routes with legal certainty
    • Label material: robust, securely adhesive, resistant to environmental influences and also seawater-resistant in accordance with British Standard BS5609
    • Flexibility: express delivery within 24 hours, in the desired quantity, from a quantity of one

Versatile labels with special characteristics

Labels in the chemical industry are applied to a wide variety of surfaces, for example drums, canisters, barrels, shipping containers, IBCs, FIBCs and pallets. Here secure adhesion is especially important, along with resistance to chemicals, dirt, grease and oil. Environmental factors such as heat, moisture, cold and UV radiation must also be taken into account, and sometimes even saltwater resistance is required. HERMA offers ideal materials and solutions in all of these cases.
