If we are to be successful in business, we must assume responsibility for the environment and take appropriate steps to this end, avoiding actions that deplete our natural resources.
For us, producing labels in a sustainable way is an important foundation for all our actions.
Thanks to our continuous production chain, from the procurement of the base paper and the manufacture of the adhesive material to the production of the labels, we can make sustainable decisions about the substances and materials we use, and about the manufacturing processes and the production and problem solutions that we offer – during all the stages of our production processes. We attach particular importance to waste avoidance, recycling and proper disposal.
Environmental protection is foremost in our approaches to everything we do – for example, we only use solvent-free adhesives and replace solvent-based printing ink systems with environmentally friendly UV systems. Our label papers consist only of chlorine-free bleached cellulose, recycled material or grass (the new raw material for paper).

In 2019, HERMA received its second German Packaging Award in the Sustainability category for its InNo-Liner system. These sustainable labels do not require any backing material at all. In the HERMA Thin Range, thinner label papers are combined with special, pressure-sensitive adhesives, providing an exceptionally low use of resources combined with extremely high quality.

Ecological labels made of renewable and regenerative raw materials, ideal for sustainable product labels:

One completely natural and continually renewable raw material for paper production is grass. The novel processing of the dried grass fibres is extremely resource-saving and thanks to its local origin, grass paper also significantly reduces the amounts of CO2 needed for transport. The same applies to eco friendly product labels made from the fibres of the silphia plant. The consistent use of sustainable FSC®-certified label materials also makes an important contribution to protecting our forests (FSC-110972).

ISO certification in compliance with ISO 50001
However, it’s not only the environmentally friendly label solutions that distinguish HERMA in its efforts to protect the environment. For example, the certification body of the TÜV SÜD (Southern German Technical Inspectorate), confirmed HERMA’s compliance with all ISO 50001 certification requirements in the development, production and sales of adhesive materials, labels and labelling machines on the company’s Filderstadt site.
HERMA is thus committed to continuously reducing specific energy consumption on its production sites. The entire workforce supports the implementation of the energy management system, providing even more evidence of HERMA’s environmentally conscious approach to its business.

Alongside innovation and digitalisation, sustainability has a particularly high priority in our corporate strategy.
This is demonstrated by our participation in a number of sustainability initiatives, e.g. our membership of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), our involvement in the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) and our EcoVadis award.
Our central goal is to achieve net zero emissions* by 2040. To achieve this, we are focusing on continuous efficiency optimisation in the production process, electrification with green electricity, entering into solar power generation and continuously reducing the use of fossil fuels to zero. We aim to reduce our direct emissions by > 42% by 2030, while at the same time working with our suppliers to reduce indirect CO2 emissions across the entire supply chain by > 25% (compared to 2021).
*By net zero emissions, HERMA means avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions in its own sphere of influence (Scope 1+2+3) as far as possible and offsetting the remaining, unavoidable emissions. No direct reference to SBTi targets.
