Packaging labels: secure labelling of rough grey cartons
When maximum adhesion is called for - packaging labels for boxes, from HERMA
The usage scenario: package labels for recycling kartons, with electronic components - secure and reliable identification
So what’s particularly tricky about that? Box labelling by attaching packaging labels for product and price information or information on the contents to a carton made of grey board or recycled material would seem to be an easy task.
But the reality is that rough surfaces or highly absorbent substrates push conventional labels to the limits of their adhesive strength. The label’s edges or even the entire label itself can peel off the package – and the box labelling with information about the contents of the carton is lost. This is a nightmare for companies which have fully automated logistics processes.
When shipping the goods, which often takes place in the same carton, it is also important to label grey cartons particularly securely so that the information and notes on the product can still be identified uniquely by the recipient.
Grey board is made from 100% waste paper and is often used as an intermediate layer on pallets, or for the production of inexpensive packaging cartons or transport boxes with different weights. The surface is usually rough.
Cartons made of this material are exceptionally rugged and stable, so they are often used for heavy items, such as the electronic components in this example. On surfaces like this, the adhesive strength of conventional paper labels quickly reaches its limits. The rough and absorbent surface significantly reduces adhesive strength. However, packaging labels for boxes with increased adhesive strength can quickly master this challenge.
These box end labels on rolls are printed using thermal transfer printing, and the printer used at the manufacturers is integrated into a labelling system that attaches the labels mechanically to the packaging.

The solution: package labels with much thicker adhesive coatings
A lot can help a lot – and this saying certainly applies to these packaging labels for boxes.
Thanks to our in-house adhesive material production, we can adjust the amount of adhesive to match your specific requirements in box labelling.
In this case, an adhesive that is already extremely strong by its very nature becomes a real ‘power pack’ when we increase the amount of adhesive.
The label paper of the carton label has the best printing properties for thermal transfer printing - for secure printing of all important information.
It is thanks to our high-precision punching tools that we can process labels on rolls with such a thick adhesive coating. We change these tools frequently to keep them clean and sharp. A robust, all-round solution for package labels with the best adhesive properties to master this demanding surface.
Adhesive material with a thicker adhesive coating is of course also suitable for many other problematic surfaces, such as sacks designed to hold building materials, stones, concrete parts and more. Labels made of film with extremely high adhesive strength are also used, for example, to fulfil the labelling obligation when placing hazardous substances on the market, for example on metal drums (in accordance with the Hazardous Substances Ordinance).
This is what distinguishes these package labels for labelling rough grey cardboard boxes:
- Powerful adhesion on rough carton surface
- Package labels with much thicker coatings of adhesive
- Reliable adhesion of the package labels, even on critical surfaces
- The packaging labels for boxes are individually and easily printable using the thermal transfer printing process
