Coffee labels: Securely seal flavour-protected packaging

Coffee, whether coffee beans or coffee powder, loses its flavour if it is stored open. Oxygen, light, moisture and heat are the natural enemies of coffee. They cause it to lose its fine flavours and make the oils it contains rancid.

After opening the coffee packaging for the first time, only a small part of the contents is usually removed. The remaining contents must be sealed to protect the flavour until the next use. This calls for a closure label that is easy to open and can be closed again and again after the required amount of coffee has been removed without damaging the coffee packaging.

The film of the aroma protection packaging with its smooth structure and the uneven surface of the bag pose great challenges for the adhesive. It must adhere particularly well, time and time again.

Filter coffee that has already been ground is often sold in vacuum aroma protection packaging. The ground coffee beans are sealed in a film tube. The air is mechanically removed, the packaging becomes firm and the reaction with oxygen is minimised. Here too, an additional resealable label ensures that the flavour is protected after initial opening.

Special challenges for the sealing coffee label and the adhesive are posed by over-corner gluing, round gluing or curved, uneven surfaces, as is the case with coffee bag packaging, for example. In addition, the production environment for filling coffee is dusty, which makes the initial adhesion of sealing coffee labels much more difficult. The labels are applied by machine in a packaging system. 

A grip tab is also required so that the closure coffee label can be opened particularly easily.

Freshness is retained and the product is ideally protected - a clear added value for the consumer, who does not need any other means of sealing.

The adhesive used is essential for the functionality of the resealable label on coffee  aroma protection packaging. On the smooth surface structures of uneven composite packaging, high initial adhesion is particularly important to ensure that packaging and sealing in production works smoothly even at high speeds.

At the same time, it is important that the consumer can open the closure label easily and without destroying it. The sealing coffee label must not tear, even if it is resealed several times. This requires a label composite made of stable material, usually tear-resistant transparent glossy polypropylene films are used here.

Polypropylene labels are dimensionally stable and resistant to moisture. The transparent, glossy surface does not obscure any information on the coffee aroma protection packaging.

Both the label film and the adhesive fulfil the food regulations for direct use on dry, moist or greasy foods.

A special HERMA production technique, known as partial pressure-sensitive adhesive deactivation, creates non-adhesive grip tabs that make handling extremely easy for the consumer.
