Labels for container and logistics identification in the automotive industry
Labels with secure adhesion and removability on steel grid pallets and polystyrene trays
The usage scenario: labelling of steel grid pallets and polystyrene trays
The same labels are often used on different surfaces and bonding surfaces – and they must adhere well in every case. These containers can have very different characteristics, particularly in the storage facility and logistics sectors: they range from rough cardboard and smooth plastic boxes to polystyrene containers and steel grid pallets.
Container identification labelling on difficult surfaces
Steel grid pallets are hard-wearing and long-lived, so they are very often used for transporting heavy parts in the automotive industry. The contents of these pallets must be clearly labelled so that the parts arrive at the right production location ‘just in time’.
Special requirements for mesh pallet labelling
The unique feature of this solution? The label can be used on difficult surfaces where much more adhesive power is needed. Metal surfaces on these steel grid pallets often have a lubricating film on the surface that significantly reduces the adhesive strength of the labels. Labels for metal surfaces must therefore be equipped with more adhesive to enable reliable labelling for identification purposes.
In automobile production, smaller parts are often stored and transported in polystyrene trays that protect the components from damage. These polystyrene trays with their rough, uneven surfaces are also a tough challenge for labels, since only parts of the adhesive can form a bond with the rough substrate.
And because the containers are re-usable, the labels must also be removable. The unprinted labels on rolls are inscribed using thermal transfer printing and can be re-inscribed with a ballpoint pen.

The solution: HERMA labels made of PE film, with a high degree of adhesion
These film labels for steel grid boxes and casks made of polystyrene are produced with a HERMA label material made of white matt PE film, in combination with a strong adhesive which is thickly coated on the film.
Identification of logistics items – with varied properties
The label is made of film and has punched perforations on the back with retaining points. This peel-off aid also makes it possible to attach only a narrow strip of the label temporarily – the rest of the back of the label is still covered with the backing material.
Ideal for labelling of steel grid boxes
Label format, material and adhesive properties have been precisely matched to the usage requirements for container labelling and logistics: thanks to the multilayer technology, the adhesive has strong adhesive properties – but it can still be peeled off at a later point in time. The film material is robust and will not tear when the label is peeled off.
The labels are equally suitable for identifying steel grid boxes and polystyrene trays, which makes it much easier to stock the labels for logistics purposes.

The outstanding features of this solution:
- Durable and tear-resistant PE film
- Thicker adhesive coatings for particularly secure adhesion to metal and polystyrene
- Peel-off aid in the backing
- Ideal for labelling lattice boxes
- Partial attachment possible (can be used as a tag)
- Can be written in thermal transfer printing
