Pallet identification labels for euro pallet marking

Secure marking of euro pallets at the pallet base

The usage scenario: Secure labelling and identification of wooden pallets and euro pallets in the base area

Wooden pallets come in different types and with many designations: Euro pallets, flat pallets, four-way pallets, one-way pallets, industrial pallets, ... what they all have in common is that they are difficult to mark permanently. However, pallet labelling is an important part of a well-functioning logistics process.

In high-bay warehouses, pallets are usually marked in the ‘foot’ area at the corner block, the only permanently visible place for pallet identification purposes. The barcode (SSCC, NVE) printed on the pallet foot labels provides all information about the goods and quantity on the pallet.

When a pallet, or parts of a pallet, are removed, the barcode on the pallet ID label can be used for booking to book the load carrier in the merchandise management system, providing efficient management of stocks in logistics without directly allocating fixed storage locations for the goods in question.

The majority of the Euro pallets, disposable pallets, returnable pallets and other industrial pallets used are made of wood – a tough challenge for labels. Wood has a fibrous surface, which is a particularly tricky substrate for most labels.

However, it is essential to prevent the pallet identification labels from peeling off, since the information on the pallet identification tags, about the pallet contents, would be lost. Conventional labels that do not adhere securely to wooden surfaces can be remedied by additionally fixing the labels with hot glue or stapling them in place. The downside of this approach? It incurs more costs since additional work steps are required.

What is the advantage of direct labelling on the pallet base?

Labels are also used in other positions for pallet labelling. When transporting pallets, both internally and externally, the pallet contents are often secured with shrink film to which labels are attached. When the shrink film is removed, e.g. when parts of the pallet contents are later removed, the label is also removed and can therefore no longer fulfil its labelling function.

The situation is different for wood pallet marking by direct labelling on the pallet base: here the pallet ID label remains permanently on the wooden pallet and forms permanent pallet identification tags.

The solution: pallet foot labels, especially for the labelling of sawed (euro) pallets, as direct labelling

HERMA pallet foot labels, made of paper or film, are coated with a thick coat of a powerful adhesive.

This ensures that sufficient adhesion can form between the uneven surface of the wooden pallet and the adhesive layer of the label, enabling permanently secure pallet labelling at the base of the pallet. The pallet foot label adheres directly to the wooden surface of the pallets – no additional attachment methods are needed.

Pallet foot labels on rolls, ideal for thermal transfer printing

With roll labels made from this label material, pallet ID tags can be printed with thermal transfer printers in your logistics process. The label paper is characterised by best contrast and excellent thermal transfer printability - for reliable barcode readability with hand-held barcode scanners or reading systems on conveyor belts in storage and transport areas.

We can also produce individually printed labels with consecutive barcodes for you, with the number range you require. All barcode types, including UPC, EAN-128, EAN-13, 2of5 Interleaved, Code 39, QR code, DataMatrix code and Pharmacodes are possible, with fixed or consecutive numbering. We manage your number ranges with database support. Printing is done on the most modern digital printing machines.

The advantages of marking Euro pallets with pallet foot labels at a glance:

  • The thick layer of adhesive provides powerful adhesion on highly textured, rough surfaces (rough sawn wood)
  • Roll labels, individually printable with thermal transfer printers, in your logistics process
  • High-quality label material for the best printing results and reliable barcode readability
  • We can also produce pre-printed labels with consecutive barcodes customised to your specifications
