Labels for disinfectants

Secure labelling of disinfectant bottles sold in pharmacies

Disinfectants have become a sought-after commodity because of the corona pandemic. Pharmacies are now officially allowed to produce disinfectants containing isopropanol.

The German Federal Office for Chemicals issued a general ruling to this end. The exemption is valid until 31 August 2020, but only for specific formulations.

Due to the pandemic-driven demand for hand disinfectants, pharmacies have no more stocks available – but they are now allowed to manufacture and sell alternatives themselves.

The Federal Association of German Pharmacist Associations e. V. (ABDA for short) provides specific information on the manufacture, notification requirements and labelling of hand disinfectants in the ‘Instructions for the manufacture of hand disinfectants in pharmacies’. The ABDA states that a manufacturing protocol must be drawn up for reasons of traceability.

The usage scenario: labelling disinfectant containers with the required information

The disinfectant may be filled into tightly sealed polyethylene or glass containers. A screw fitted with a syringe insert is recommended as a seal. Several formulations have been approved for the production of hand disinfectants.

How must the labels for disinfectants be designed?

The following requirements apply for disinfectant labels:

  • The labels must adhere firmly and securely to the containers
  • The print on the label must contain the following information: the type of formulation, the name and address of the dispensing pharmacy, the explanation ‘solution for hygienic hand disinfection’, information on the active substances and their concentration and quantity in ml, plus instructions on usage for consumers
  • The date of manufacture, a unique batch number and the expiry date (‘Can be used until’) for reasons of traceability
  • The word ‘Danger’ and corresponding icons depicting danger must also appear on the label to warn consumers about the volatile and irritant components. Safety and disposal instructions are also essential.

Several pharmacies are already producing disinfectants in accordance with these formulations. They supply hospitals, fire brigades, police, and retirement homes and are also selling the products to private individuals.
